When Gerald began his research for this book, his primary focus was on the genealogy of the Gallegos family of 18th Century New Mexico. It did not take long for his research to expand to Zacatecas and Nueva Viscaya commerce and finance, transportation, agriculture, and silver refining. The author uses primary source information whenever possible, which include AGN Testimonies, LDS Sacramental Films; Financial obligations, contracts, wills, estate settlements, and store inventories from the Parral Archives; and several documents from a private collection in Villa Unión in Durango, Mexico.This history not only changes the way we will all perceive 17th Century New Mexico, but it is also an eclectic and provocative tale of the rich history of the Southwestern Frontier, filled with fascinating stories, historical business and agricultural practices, and illicit schemes of some of the most prominent people of the time.Gerald Mandell, known to his friends, family, and colleagues as Jerry, attended college in Colorado Springs, CO in 1965, and decades later graduated from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jerry had a deep interest in photography, however, he was absolutely enthralled with History - particularly Spanish Colonial History. He spent most of his adult life, from approximately 1984 to 2006 doing Spanish Colonial research and writing articles. He was a winner of the following awards: 1991 Second Prize, Spain and America in the Quincentennial of the Discovery Award (given to Vargas Project) 1990 Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá Award, Historical Society of New Mexico (given to Vargas Project) 1995 Award of Merit, American Association for State and Local History (given to Vargas Project) 2000 Gilberto Espinosa Prize for best article, New Mexico Historical Review 2002 Gilberto Espinosa Prize for best article, New Mexico Historical Review 2005 Gilberto Espinosa Prize for best article, New Mexico Historical Review He has been a key researcher of the Gallegos family of New Mexico. He was a research consultant with the Don Diego de Vargas Project - Allegations of Extortion He was instrumental in the Chavez research for Beyond Origins of New Mexico Families.This book was in the process of being published until his sudden death in November of 2006. The only remaining copy was a printed copy that he had made that he was ready to submit to his publisher. His daughter, Myria, received the hard copy of the manuscript shortly after his death, and she was finally able to scan and publish it in 2024. She kept the manuscript completely intact and also added a table of contents. Read more
